Unit 5

Our new unit "The Heart of the Jungle" (jumping and moving activities), excites the students about our upcoming "Jumprope For Heart" event.  This unit lasts for about a month and involves plenty of jumping and movement.  Jumpropes make great Valentine's Day treats!!!

Key Learning: There are many different ways to increase your heart rate during physical activities.

Unit Focus:  What strategies can we use to increase or decrease our heart rate?

The essential questions and vocabulary for each grade level are as follows:

Kindergarten:
Focus Questions:
How does participating in rigorous physical education activities benefit your heart?
How and when is stretching important?

Vocabulary:  rigorous, stretching

First Grade:
Focus Questions:
How does knowing how to strengthen your muscles help improve your physical activity performance?
Why are warm up and cool down exercises important?
What strategies can be used to keep the correct pace for an activity?

Vocabulary:  strengthen, pace

Second Grade:
Focus Questions:
Why is it important to be able to recognize the difference between a resting heart rate and a heart rate during physical activity?
How can technology be used to measure fitness?
What are the effects of exercising for longer periods of time/
How do we use counts to keep us in sequence?

Vocabulary:  recognize, technology, sequence
